Jean Bourgain

For spectacular inroads into several central topics of mathematical analysis: the geometry of Banach spaces, convexity in high dimensions, harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, and nonlinear partial differential equations from mathematical physics; doing this in all of these fields by simultaneously bringing into play different areas of mathematics: number theory, combinatorics and probability, and showing their relevance to the problem in a previously unforeseen fashion.
